In Italy you can find many bike competitions, because cycling is a real passion for many Italian people.

Amateur Competitions

The most of amateur competitions have different types of categories that distinguish for age of cyclists. The categories include people between twenty and seventy years old. A single category include a range of years.

Most popular:

The Brunello Gran Fondo is an amateur competition of the Val d’ Orcia on September in Montalcino (Tuscany)
There are two routes:

  • Competitive route of 54 km
  • Excursion route of 32 km.

Gran Fondo Città della Spezia and Granfondo Pinarello, a hard cycle route because of the many slopes and 200 Km long.

Professional competitions

  • The most famous is Giro d’Italia (link giro d’itali history)
  • Another one important is the “Milano-Sanremo“, known as “The Spring classic”, it is the longest of all professional one-day cycling races (294 km). It was born in 1907
  • Tour of Lombardy, the first edition was in 1905.

The hardest obstacle in this route is the Madonna del Ghisallo, where there is a shrine with museum containing religious and cycling objects and photos. Period: Mid-October
